Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer will affect one in every six men, and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in African American men. As with any cancer, early detection is a key component to successful treatment and survival. Which is why St. Francis has a comprehensive prostate cancer program which offers screening, diagnosis, leading-edge treatment and support.

Methods of Diagnosis

St. Francis offers a full range of diagnostic tests. Options include digital rectal examinations, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) lab tests, transrectal ultrasounds and biopsies.

Leading-Edge Treatment

Our leading-edge Prostate Care Program and highly experienced health care professionals, provide advanced treatments including hormone therapy and prostate seed implantation-radiation.

With prostate seed implant, the patient undergoes the seed implant procedure in the operating room and then receives radiation therapy on an outpatient basis. With IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy), more radiation is delivered specifically to the prostate while sparing the surrounding normal tissue.  The advantages are dose escalation which can improve cure rates with reduced side effects.

We have added HDR (High Dose Rate) Brachytherapy as a treatment option for prostate cancer. This treatment may greatly reduce a patient’s recovery time, his likelihood of impotence and it may reduce the risk of incontinence when compared to radical prostatectomy. Brachytherapy places the radiation inside your tumor, tightly focused within the site of the cancer.
